We offer 2 different master classes in a weekend, with opportunities for interaction and jamming with students and instructors, lead by Lua Hadar and David Austin, professional musicians based in San Francisco, California. Recommended for intermediate and advanced students.

Class 1: For Singers, Pianists, Guitarists and Horns (trumpet, sax, etc): Rhythm and Ensemble. Communicating a feel, counting off, communication between singer and pianist. In this class, we will study basic counting, pulse, tempo, and phrasing as it relates to song. Each style of music has certain characteristic rhythm patterns.  Where accents are placed and how the time is “felt’ can make all the difference for a successful performance. The rhythms of the American Songbook find their origins in Rag Time, African and Latin American influences, New Orleans, and Tin Pan Alley. These roots create a rhythmic base for the melodies and phrasing of the great standards. Students will learn to feel the rhythm and count off to a band in a variety of grooves.

Class 2: For Singers, Pianists and Guitarists: Interpretation and Ensemble. Warm-up vocal exercises framing the melodic/harmonic practices of the American Jazz Standards, individual coaching in a group setting, study of lyrics, diction, singing style, microphone technique, communicating a feel, developing simple arrangements, working together.

Ce projet d’étude musical offert par Lua Hadar et David Austin, musiciens professionels à San Francisco, Californie, propose deux classes pour niveaux intermédiaires et avancés sur un weekend, avec les opportunités pour interaction et jam avec les autres étudiants et les instructeurs. 

Class 1: Pour Chanteurs, Pianistes, Guitaristes, et “Soufflants” – Rythms et Ensemble. Dans ce cours nous étudierons “counting” (le calcul fondamental), le “Pulse” (battement) le tempo, en rapport avec le chant.  Chaque style de musique a des caractéristiques particulieres: ou sont placés les accents, et comment le “time” ou le rythme est ressenti, peut faire une grande différence entre une bonne ou mauvaise pérformance. Les rythmes de l’ “American Songbook” ont leurs origines dans le “Rag Time,” des influences Africaines et Latines, de la Nouvelle Orléans, et de “Tin Pan Alley.” Ces racines créent une base rythmique pour les mélodies et le phrasé des grands “Standards.” Les étudiants apprendront comment ressentir les rythmes et de construire leur chant sur eux, et le bon moyen de démarrer un groupe dans une variété de “grooves” (styles rythmiques).

Class 2: Pour Chanteurs, Pianistes et Guitaristes – Interpretation et Ensemble. L’art vocal, concerne la formation vocale autour des mélodies et des harmonies dans la chanson “standard” américaine avec une étude des paroles, de la diction, et de la phrase. ‘Coaching’ individuel dans un cadre de groupe. Comment travailler ensemble, chanteur et pianist ou guitariste, et comment s’entendre, trouver le tempo et la tonalité, créer une présentation dynamique et musicale.
